Rochester, N.Y. -
A nine-year girl is recovering after she was beaten with an extension cord and a belt, Rochester police said. It happened the day after Thanksgiving.Deester "Dee" Gilley was in court on Tuesday. She is facing charges of second degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
On Friday, November 26, a street maintenance supervisor working for the City of Rochester saw a little girl running on Virginia Avenue.
"She was wearing a red t-shirt and a pair of underwear on a day that was in the 30's temperature wise," Jimmie Junious, 60, wrote in a statement to police.
Junious said the girl was bleeding from her nose, mouth, face and legs. "I noticed that her legs were bruised and busted open and it looked like a bleeding bite mark on her right cheek," he said.
Junious told his dispatch to call 911, and pulled over to ask if the girl was okay. "She said she was afraid," he wrote. "She said 'my mother beat me up,' then said 'I don't want to go back there, please don't take me back."
Junious let her sit in his truck, and gave the girl his sandwich when she said she was hungry. "One of the neighbors gave her a pop, and someone else gave her a sweater to cover up with," he wrote. "Shortly later the police arrived."
According to the felony complaint, Gilley is the girl's stepmother. She lives on Post Avenue. 13WHAM stopped by her home. A man in the driveway said Gilley wasn't talking. "The media just messes the story up," he said.
