Rochester, N.Y. – Rochesterians had a front row seat to history Saturday at the Rochester Museum and Science Center.
Documents written by Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. were on display as part of "First Step to Freedom" touring exhibit.
One of the documents: an early draft of the Emancipation Proclamation, handwritten by Lincoln himself.
"It brought tears to my eyes. I'm like the dorky social studies teacher that goes over and cries when they see Lincoln's hand-writing," said Wendy Barton-Novellin, a seventh grade teacher in Greece who came with her family Saturday. "Its pretty amazing that our government is able to keep these documents, and keep them in such beautiful shape. It's just incredible."
The manuscript of a speech written and given by King was on display as well. He delivered the speech in New York City in 1962.
The exhibit runs one last time: Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
