Good luck to Mr. Rawlins. He sounds like a pretty tough guy & I expect will bounce back. Here in Canada he would not have had to pay a cent to the hospital. I hope Americans reelect Barack Obama so they no longer have to face ruinous hospital bills.

COBRA is transitional insurance and will cover only the medical condition that exists during the duration of the policy, limited by the coverage of that existing policy. If this person's ongoing medical bills, which will be substantial, exceed the coverage, then he will be responsible for that increment under existing law. Obamacare to the rescue! Beginning in 2013, adults can seek an expansion of insurance coverage without being disqualified on the basis of having a pre-existing condition. That is, unless the tea partiers are able to make good on their pledge to repeal Obamacare.
