Brighton, N.Y. — 13WHAM News has learned that the injured teenagers are John Zakhary, Christa Mickol, Kevin Thapa and Scott Collins. Mickol and Collins are in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Zarkary and Thapa are under evaluation, meaning they have not been assigned conditions.
Speed A Likely Factor
Brighton Police are investigating numerous factors that may have led to an afternoon bus crash, but say that speed is high on the list of likely causes.
“I’m looking at speed as a factor in the accident,” said Brighton Police Chief, Mark Henderson. “That’s first and foremost. That’s attributed to the actions of the white vehicle.”
It is unclear how fast the car was traveling at the time of the crash. Authorities believe the school bus was driving on Warren Avenue near Hibiscus Drive, when it was struck from behind.
The force of the collision was so great that it sent the sedan underneath the rear tires of the bus.
Police say the four teenagers in the sedan were transported to Strong Memorial hospital. The occupants of the school bus were not seriously injured according to authorities.
Residents of Warren Avenue say drivers regularly speed through this stretch as they travel to Edgewood Avenue or Clover Street.
“It’s a shame, but people drive down this street way too fast,” said Jeff Spero, a resident of Warren Avenue.
