Canandaigua, N.Y. - A 25-second video created by students at Canandaigua Academy has proven that they listen when they are told not to text and drive.
They won a $5,000 prize from New York Central Mutual Fire Insurance Company.
The Canandaigua Academy Film Society created the video about the dangers of distracted driving.
Student Government President, Aliza Bridgman, says "we think it's a really great message because a lot of kids do text and drive. I've been in the car with people who have done it themselves and I've had to tell them it's not a good idea."
The advice in this student production goes beyond just texting. The video also warns against eating, listening to loud music, putting on make-up and anything else that could cause a distraction while driving.
Although the video is only 25 seconds, the kids know it will make a difference. One student, Sydney Kovar is excited about the influence of this video saying "you can impact someone's life and maybe save their life from just a couple seconds, it's really quite crazy."
Jeremy Robinson, VP of NYCM Insurance, commented by saying "it's really a simple message, they get it, don't drive distracted, don't text and drive, don't eat and drive, you've got friends in the car - keep the noise down."
