(AP) - New York is joining 13 states that allow voters to register online in an effort to improve voter turnout and save money.

The initiative announced Thursday also expands opportunities for voters to register in languages other than English. Voters will also be able to update their addresses and party enrollments online.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the effort knocks down longstanding barriers that prevented many New Yorkers from voting.

The online system is available at Department of Motor Vehicles offices or through any computer.

Cuomo says registering to vote in person or by mail is cumbersome and expensive.
