West Seneca, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a horse from the Erie County sheriff's mounted patrol unit was killed when the trailer it was being towed in tipped over near Buffalo.

West Seneca police tell Buffalo media outlets that a trailer carrying the horse began to sway because of a mechanical problem before detaching from the police truck and tipping over late Thursday night. The single horse inside the trailer was killed.

A sheriff's deputy who was towing the trailer was not injured.

Police are investigating the accident.
