Chili, N.Y. - Valerie Ketchum is used to the traffic near the intersection of Rt. 252 and Archer Road, but she says it's the accidents that worry her.
The traffic light was changed to flash after an accident in December. The State Department of Transportation says a truck took out the pole that controlled the mechanism for the traffic signal, so it was switched to flash until the light can be fixed.
The State D.O.T. urges drivers to be patient, slow down and obey the traffic signal that is there.
Neither the State nor the Sheriffs Office could provide accident data for that intersection.
But Ketchum said there have been at least three accidents in the last two months. Her fear is that someone will get seriously hurt.
"Now that it's a flashing light, there is no way to slow traffic going East and West...I'd rather it go back to a stop light, I don't know why it changed."
Ketchum said the speed limit on Archer is 30 miles an hour, but she says no one goes that slow. She says that causes issues when they get to the intersection.
Lori Maher from the State D.O.T. said an intersection is as safe as the people who drive through it. She says while the flashing light might be inconvenient, she doesn't think it has made the intersection more dangerous.
Maher told 13WHAM News, "The short answer is we're aware of it, and we have a plan to restore it to full operation."
Ketchum said, "there's too much traffic to keep it at a flashing light."
The State D.O.T. says 7,000 cars travel through that intersection every day.
They hope to have the traffic signal repaired and back to normal in two months.
