Rochester, N.Y. – The City of Rochester may soon implement a pilot program that tests the feasibility of food trucks downtown.

City Clerk Daniel Karin told a group of food truck owners Wednesday to expect a plan that would allow more trucks on city streets this coming spring or summer.

“We’ve committed to doing a pilot project and if it works well and we think there’s something permanent we can do including code changes, we’ll work on that as well for the following years,’ Karin said.

The food truck owners walked away encouraged, but said they are banding together to keep the heat on city leaders.

“One person can’t do it, it has to be coalition where we have a food trucks,” said Lou DiMarco, a food truck owner.

Currently, only sidewalk vendors are given access to an array of city corners.

Food trucks require more space and raise safety concerns, according to Karin.

Twelve local food trucks recently gathered at the Rochester Public Market for the Food Truck Rodeo, which attracted a huge crowd.
