Rochester, N.Y.- With frigid temperatures and lake effect snow expected to move into the area Tuesday afternoon, Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks is urging residents to take the proper steps needed to prepare for a weather-related emergency.
“It is crucial that our families fully prepare themselves and follow essential tips to ensure their safety and well-being during the coming lake effect snow storm,” said Brooks. “Our area is no stranger to winter weather. However, storms should not to be taken lightly and all residents are highly urged to continue to use safe practices both on and off the roadways.”
Brooks recommended:
· Provide yourself adequate time to reach your destination as you may need to adjust your speeds for road conditions.
· Identify elderly friends and neighbors who may be impacted by a power outage, and develop a plan to check on them.
· Maintain an adequate supply of de-icing products for walkways and snow shovels.
· Collect a three-day supply of bottled water and non-perishable food, as well as a working flashlight, batteries and battery-powered radio.
· Operate electric generators in an outdoor, non-enclosed location to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
· Keep a warm blanket, water, and other appropriate supplies in your vehicle in the event of being stranded during a storm.
The high temperature for Tuesday is 14 degrees with temperatures dropping to single digits in the evening.
