Henrietta, N.Y. — Gun shops throughout the region are packed not only with customers searching for guns and accessories, but answers to questions so many have about the state’s new gun law.

“It’s so confusing,” said Kordell Jackson of Jackson Guns and Ammo. “You hear one thing on TV and you hear one thing in the paper and everybody’s making rumors and we really don’t know.”

He has chosen to keep all the items in the shelves and let customers buy what they want.

The law further restricts assault weapons, reduces the legal capacity of a magazine to seven rounds from ten and establishes new rules for licensing, registration, sales and mental health provisions.

“Until we’re told different or I’ve been sent a letter from the ATF or from the governor himself, (then) everything is going to be the way it was,” said Jackson.

Customers have flooded his Henrietta store; some selling guns to the store, others looking for advice.

“They don’t make a retrofit kit for the clips that I have,” said Eric Roeding of Henrietta.

“They don’t make a seven round clip for the weapon that I have.”

Many of the provisions in the law won’t take effect for a full year, but there are other deadlines related to mental health that start in two months and others set to take effect 19 days after the bill was signed.

A viewer told 13WHAM News that Gander Mountain employees began removing a bevy of handguns from shelves early Thursday afternoon.

“They were telling people they couldn’t sell them anymore because they were ten round magazines,” said Eric Metzger.

A manager for Gander Mountain told 13WHAM News some guns were removed because of state law, but didn’t provide more details. Gander Mountain’s corporate communications office did not respond to a request for comment.
