Henrietta, N.Y. – The walls at Jackson Guns & Ammo are looking a bit bare.
Owner Kordell Jackson says, in the past few days, it seems like the door hasn’t had a chance to shut.
“Sales have been astronomical,” Kordell said.
He attributes the spike to all the talk of gun control following the shooting at Sandy Hook.
“Nobody wants their gun taken away,” he said. “They’re afraid of having their Second Amendment rights taken away.”
Jackson says he sees a similar surge any time stricter gun laws are bandied about in Washington.
“It’s not just assault rifles, people are buying any gun they can find, what suits their needs,” Jackson said.
Colin O’Malley of Metro Justice isn’t thrilled with this run on guns.
“I worry that reactions at this moments is fear as opposed to constructive steps forward with public safety,” O’Malley said.
He says there needs to be more funding for mental health services along with a national ban on assault weapons.
“The uses of a weapon like this are not sports, not leisure, they are military weapons and we shouldn’t be surprised when we see them used in such a fashion,” O’Malley said.
Jackson says he was as shocked as everyone else by the tragedy telling 13WHAM he’ll close his store for one day in honor of those killed.
