Victor, N.Y. - Mike Speranza says it was an offer he couldn't refuse. "I was invited to the White House...that was cool." Speranza joined 500 chefs from around the country on the White House lawn . They were invited to volunteer in First Lady Michelle Obama's crusade to get kid moving and healthier. It is called Chefs In School. Speranza volunteers a few times a month at Victor Intermediate School. He talks to kids about healthy eating and gives them hands on lessons to create healthy snacks.
Students line up at a salsa station and load the healthy vegetable-laden snack on wheat crackers. They also use dried fruit and nuts to make granola. Fifth graders love fixing their own treats and sampling their creations.
The Chefs in Schools program is also expanding in other schools, such as the Rochester City School District.
Speranza says changing eating habits takes time, but he had already seen small changes. Students say they can't wait to get home and try out the new recipes.
