Hamlin, N.Y. -- The Hamlin Town supervisor has plans to build a new library but he has worries the town zoning board is not on the same page.
As it stands, the public library is book-ended by a bar and a pizza place in a strip mall far from the center of the village. The new location would be near the town hall. An exception to current zoning codes would need to be granted to build it 20 feet closer to the road. The Zoning Board of Appeals has to approve that change.
Thomas Breslawski, Hamlin Town Supervisor, is an advocate for the construction of the new library and said community support is vital to influencing the board and Monday night's meeting.
"It's the chance for the town of Hamlin residents to talk about why they think a 20-foot variance...is or is not an impediment to constructing a library that would essentially be Hamlin taxpayer free," said Supervisor Breslawski.
The supervisor said the library is funded by a $600,000 donation and a $466,000 state construcation grant.
The meeting is open to the public and starts 7:30 pm next Monday at the town hall in Hamlin.
A call to the chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals was placed but a response is still pending.
