Rochester, N.Y. – Highland Hospital held free heart screenings for student athletes on Saturday.

Cardiologists screened for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM), which is a leading cause of sudden death in young athletes.

Chief of Cardiology at Highland, Chad Teeters, said, “We hear every year about athletes dying on playing fields and student athletes dying. So we’re trying to prevent that in our community.”

Parents from around the community brought their children in on Saturday to have them screened.  “This is wonderful and I’ve got to say it was very easy access, we got here and got into the hospital within minutes,” said Mary McDonald, a Brighton resident with two student athletes.

Cardiologists screened for a variety of other heart abnormalities along with HOCM.
