Sodus Bay, N.Y. - A mother and daughter from Lyons had to be rescued Wednesday while kayaking on Sodus Bay.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office says 47-year-old Susan Harding and her 18-year-old daughter Riley ran into trouble with high winds and waves near Newark Island.

When the Marine Patrol found them, Susan was hanging onto her kayak, which was nearly submerged. Riley was still inside her kayak and had managed to tie the kayaks together with an elastic cord, according to deputies.

Deputies were able to get both women safely onto their boat. The kayaks were also pulled aboard.

Susan and Riley were wearing life jackets. Other than being cold, deputies say they were uninjured.
