Brockport, N.Y. - Lakeside Health System announced on Thursday it plans to close its Emergency Department and eliminate 61 inpatient beds.
The Lakeside Health System Board and Acting CEO James Cummings are working on a plan to transform the health system from an acute care hospital and emergency department to an outpatient diagnostic and treatment center.
The Board says the goal is to restore Lakeside's financial stability so that it can meet the community's health care needs for the long term.
Cummings said the Beikirch Care Center, 120-bed skilled nursing home facility will remain open.
The New York State Department of Health still has to approve the plan. If the State accepts Lakeside's plan, the Emergency Department and 61 inpatient beds would close within the next two months.
SUNY Brockport released a statement about the changes saying, "The closing of Lakeside’s emergency department has a major impact on the College, particularly in terms of transportation. We are creating a plan to develop new relationships that will best serve the emergency medical needs of our students."
