LeRoy, N.Y. -- Superintendent Kim Cox of the LeRoy School District released a statement Monday saying the school is safe.
The statement came after the mysterious illness affecting more than a dozen students at the high school was diagnosed as “conversion disorder.”
Health leaders say they have ruled out pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders, [PANDAS] a condition associated with streptococcal infections.
Gardasil, the human papillomavirus [HPV] vaccine, has also been ruled out, as many of the girls did not receive it.
District leaders say they’ve been working with medical professionals, the NYS Dept. of Health, the Dept. of Environmental Conservation and the Environmental Protection Agency.
The district also hired an independent expert to review the findings. The statement says no evidence of an environmental cause was found.
The superintendent said, "Unfortunately, the endless speculation without factual basis is creating an extreme level of anxiety and concern. And students are unable to focus on learning.”
