Lyons, N.Y.- Giant Hogweed is extremely dangerous to humans.
The State Department of Environmental Conservation warns residents to steer clear of the invasive plant. For years, Giant Hogweed has grown throughout Western New York and elsewhere in the northeast.
Not only does the Hogweed engulf space that could be used for crops or wildlife, it's dangerous--a mere touch can cause severe skin irritation, blistering and even blindness.
To combat Hogweed, the DEC, counties and landowners have tried a myriad of methods from digging it up to spraying it with herbicides.
But it keeps coming back, according to landowners from Wayne County who spoke with 13WHAM News.
Another problem is that the DEC's program aimed at controlling Giant Hogweed may soon lose funding, which could put residents and farmers in worse positions in the years to come.
If you think you may have Giant Hogweed on your property, you are asked to stay away from the plant and contact the state DEC.
