Fairport, N.Y. - As the weather begins to heat up; it's time to start thinking about the summer swimming season.May is National Water Safety Month and the Consumer Product Safety Commission has released a few reminders to keep your kids safe when they take a splash.
It's important to remove the pool cover and make sure there are no partial covers where a child can get stuck.
Always keep your eyes on children near a pool or spa; a flotation device is never a good substitute for adult supervision.
The CPSC also recommends installing a fence to secure the area.
"Having a child myself, I would ensure the fencing and the drain covers. With one main drain cover you'll want a suction cut off. If the worst were to happen and a child were to get stuck on the drain cover, the pump suction relief would turn itself off, allowing them to get free themselves,” said Theresa Antenucci with Design Pool and Spa.
The CPSC also recommends that the fence should be at least four feet tall with self-closing and self-latching gates.
