ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The U.S. Census reports that there are 3,454 local government entities in New York state.
That includes 929 towns or townships and 679 independent school districts.
The Census tallies the number of local governments every five years to provide a uniform benchmark for statistics. The preliminary figures for 2012 were released this week.
Nationwide there are 89,004 local governments. Illinois leads the nation with 6,968.
