Rochester, N.Y. --- Sheriffs across the New York State have weighed in individually on the recently passed NY SAFE ACT and now they’re speaking as one.

In a letter (attached) submitted to Governor Andrew Cuomo this week the New York State Sheriffs’ Association commends some of the provisions in the state’s newly passed gun control legislation.  But the group also sees many concerns about certain provisions and asks that they be revisited by lawmakers.

In many cases the organization states that the only individuals impacted by the new laws would be responsible and law-abiding gun owners.

In the case of banning assault weapons and capping magazine capacity the Sheriffs’ Association asked whether either provision would substantially reduce crime rates or violence.

On the issue of transferring school security plan responsibilities to the state the Sheriffs’ Association asked notes that their agencies and local police already have those plans in place and would be the most appropriate agencies to oversee those plans.
