NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) - New York State Park Police battled the swift current above Niagara Falls to rescue a dog who became stranded on an island after being scared off by July 4 fireworks.
Members of the swift water rescue team walked through rapids Friday to get to Little Brother Island, about 100 yards from the brink of Niagara Falls. That's where a visiting veterinarian from Rochester had spotted the white dog, more than a week after it was reported missing by a Lackawanna family that was in Niagara Falls for the Independence Day festivities.
The officers used hamburgers to coax the nervous pooch named Lily to come with them back through the water.
After the two-and-a-half-hour rescue effort, Lily is back with her owners.
