Rochester, N.Y. - More than $635,000 in federal grants will help keep law enforcement safe in upstate New York.

The money will be used to buy more than 2,800 bulletproof vests.

It is part of a federal program co-sponsored by Senator Charles Schumer that splits the cost of new body armor with local police departments.

Rochester and Monroe County were among the top recipients.

The city will receive 125 vests, while 245 will go to the county.
