Rochester, N.Y. - A unique exhibit that explores racial differences opened Sunday at the Rochester Museum & Science Center.
"It wasn't just an exhibition to bring to town," said Kate Bennett, President of the museum. "It was also a community conversation to create."
The exhibit, Race: Are We So Different? explores race through a bevy of perspectives.
"It talks about race from a scientific point of view, from a cultural point of view, (and) from a historic point of view," explained Bennett. "All these things together combined to help us understand what race is today.
"My daughter heard of the exhibit and we wanted to find out what was here," said Denise Wellin of Churchville.
Russell Fielder of Rochester was also compelled to visit the museum simply to see the new exhibit on race.
"It's just interesting to hear some of the different meanings people come up with to describe it," said Fielder.
In all, 612 people visited the museum Sunday. That total is considered "very good" for a Sunday, according to the museum's information desk. It is not possible to determine how many of the museum's patrons visited the race exhibit because its attendance totals are for general admission.
