North Chili, N.Y. - Friends say Sonny Chung was a dedicated police officer and loving father of two boys, Jason and Elliott.

Fellow officers, friends and family remembered Chung during calling hours and a service at the Cultural Life Center at Roberts Wesleyan College Monday.

Chung emigrated to the United States from South Korea when he was 12. He was living in New York City when Rochester Police recruited the young officer.

He transferred to the Gates Police Department in 1996. Chung was forced to retire after a serious car accident in 2002. He suffered brain injuries when his police cruiser struck a tree while he was responding to a burglary call.

Tragedy struck again two weeks ago. Chung was struck and killed after the driver of an SUV jumped the curve and hit the retired officer while he was walking down West Ridge Road in Greece.

The 23-year-old driver wasn't charged but police tell us they are reconstructing the accident and awaiting toxicology reports before deciding whether there will be charges.

There were no skid marks which police say could also be a factor in the accident reconstruction.

Police did appeal for witnesses to come forward and many have, which is providing police with more information.
