New York State – If you’re looking to buy cherries grown in New York State they might be hard to come by this summer.
The USDA says freezing weather in the spring severely damaged the crop this year. Cherry production is expected to be around 250 tons, down nearly 65 percent from last year’s crop of over 700 tons.
The low numbers are made worse by the fact that farmers can’t insure their cherry and peach crops. A proposed law backed by Senator Chuck Schumer and Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle would change that, offering aid to farmers whose crops are damaged by weather.
