Henrietta / Pittsford, N.Y. --- On Thursday the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of two suspects in a series of vehicle break-ins.  Eric Magin, 42 of Rochester, and Kelly Hansen, 43 of Rochester, are facing multiple charges after their arrests this week.

Investigators believe the two were involved in breaking into Livingston County Sheriff John York's official vehicle on Friday September 9 at the Marketplace Mall.

Sheriff York said he was meeting his daughter and granddaughters at the mall to shop for school supplies.

When he returned he found thieves had taken two department-issued .45 caliber handguns, a taser, a GPS unit, and a camera.

York said the vehicle was locked and the weapons were concealed out of view and inside a center console.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Investigators also suspect Magin and Hansen of committing similar break-ins on Monday September 12th at the Pittsford Plaza on Monroe Avenue.  In that case they charged Magin and Hansen with stealing a vehicle from that lot as well as valuables.  Other similar crimes remain under investigation.

Sheriff York Responds

Sheriff John York said Thursday that he is very proud of the combined efforts of the Monroe and Livingston County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Rochester and Gates Police Departments.  Kelly Hansen was arrested at a Motel 6 in Gates on Tuesday and Magin was arrested Wednesday by a warrants deputy at Hansen’s Lyell Avenue address according to a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

York added that the cooperation of these agencies brought these “persistent criminals into custody in a timely fashion.”  He said because the investigation continues he can not add any further public comment so as not to jeopardize the law enforcement and legal process.

Magin’s Criminal Past

13WHAM News explored Eric Magin’s criminal past and found a long list of crimes that are not too dissimilar from the ones he’s now accused of committing.  From 1994 to 2010 Magin served all or parts of three separate prison sentences and state officials say that each time he was paroled he was quickly returned to prison.

In one example Magin was paroled on December 26th, the day after Christmas, and re-arrested on January 1st, New Years Day.  His parole came after serving two years for stealing cigarettes.  His subsequent arrest was for…stealing more cigarettes.

In another example Magin was paroled in April 2000 and re-arrested in June.

Most recently, Magin was paroled in August 2010 but re-arrested in October after Greece Police said he broke into a car in the parking lot of the Greece Ridge Mall and stole a GPS unit.  Security cameras reportedly captured the crime on tape and court documents state that Magin is accused of having in his position a stolen personal check.

In April 2011 Magin was again arrested and this time in Rochester.  Court and police documents state that he was driving with another man in the Plymouth Avenue area and the two were attempting to buy crack cocaine.  At some point the victim reports they were both outside the vehicle and Magin jumped into the man’s car and sped off.

Rochester Police later arrested him and during that encounter Magin reportedly started swinging and punching the police officer.  The officer broke a bone in his wrist and Magin was charged with 2nd Degree Assault as well as Grand Larceny for the car theft.

The October 2010 and April 2011 charges appear to be pending against Magin while he now faces these new charges.
