(CNN) - A new survey shows that the vast majority of America's teachers don't want to carry a gun in the classroom, despite recent violence.

School Improvement Network, a company that helps with teacher training, talked with nearly 11,000 educators.

72% said they wouldn't carry a gun in school even if they were allowed. 36% of educators surveyed reported owning a firearm. 92% said they feel safe in school and believe their students feel the same.

But 88% said they would feel even more safe having an armed police officer on campus.

The survey was conducted in January, weeks after the December 14 Connecticut school shooting.
