Greece, N.Y. - The Greece Central School District will lay off triple the number of teachers at the end of the school year than originally planned.

A school district spokeswoman said the district had to cut 17.6 elementary teaching positions.

Greece schools originally planned to cut only five teachers.

The school district cited decreasing enrollment at the kindergarten and elementary grade levels that led to the increased lay offs.

Assistant Superintendent Carol Pallas will speak to the school board June 12 about layoffs and staffing levels for the 2012-2013 school year.

Greece schools said they will bring back teachers if enrollment increases.
