(13WHAM-TV) - It might be hard to believe, but the first text message was sent 20 years ago Monday.
Neil Papworth used a computer terminal to send the message "Merry Christmas" to a colleague's cell phone.
It's now the most widely-used application in the world, with 81-percent of mobile phone subscribers using it.
Its popularity is on the decline, however, as more people switch to smartphone apps that essentially do the same thing for free.
