Lake Placid, N.Y. (AP) - One of the most well-traveled and iconic bridges in the Adirondack High Peaks has been replaced as trail crews continue to repair backcountry trail damage from Tropical Storm Irene.
The bridge across Marcy Dam, in a popular hiking region near Lake Placid, has been a favorite photo spot for generations of hikers. It was destroyed by Irene's floodwaters last August, but on Sunday, trail crews completed a new one at a less scenic spot downstream.
The Department of Environmental Conservation tells The Associated Press that four trails remain closed in the High Peaks and there are numerous detours where trails or bridges were washed out.
Catskill trails weren't as badly damaged as Adirondack ones, but crews are still working to replace some backcountry foot bridges.
