Troy, N.Y. (AP) - A 29-year-old woman is in the burn unit at Westchester County Medical Center after she rescued a baby from her neighbor's burning apartment in Troy.

Police and fire officials tell Albany-area media that the child was apparently alone in the apartment when the fire broke out shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday.

Troy Police Captain John Cooney says it's lucky the baby was sleeping in a low playpen rather than a standard crib. He says she likely would have died of heat and smoke if she had been higher up from the floor.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The rescuer's name and condition weren't immediately available.
