Albion, N.Y. – A man was arrested in Sunday night's stabbing death of a woman outside the Albion Wal-Mart.
The Orleans County Sheriff's Department charged Luis Rodriguez-Flamenco with second degree murder.
Investigators say he is an illegal immigrant and Honduran national.
They have no evidence that Rodriguez-Flamenco even knew the victim, Kathleen Byham, 45.
The sheriff's department indicated this appears to be a random act of violence and an attempted carjacking.
Deputies say Rodriguez-Flamenco went to the store with two friends to get a cartridge for an air pistol.
In arrest papers, Rodriguez-Flamenco told deputies he saw the victim walking away from the store. The papers say Flamenco told investigators he grabbed her keys, and then pulled out a knife and started stabbing her, but didn't know why he did it.
One witness helped comfort Byham as she waited for an ambulance to arrive.
"About three times she tried moving and I just told her lay still then she just stopped moving," said Kevin Nau, who came to Byham's side. "She wasn't breathing and I thought she got hit in the lungs and I called 911 again and told them to hurry up."
Two other men, Mexican nationals, were questioned, but it is not believed they were part of the assault. They have been turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.
Deputies searched a field near the Wal-Mart store on Monday morning and recovered two knives.
Rodriguez-Flamenco was assigned a public defender and is scheduled to return to court on Wednesday.
