Pendleton, N.Y. (AP) - A western New York animal shelter has been destroyed by a fire that killed 60 animals, including a llama, alpaca, sheep and lambs.

The Lakeview Animal Sanctuary and Horse Farm in Pendleton typically cares for about 100 animals and some were saved by volunteers during the blaze.

Shelter directors were assessing the damage and said rebuilding will be a challenge.

Lakeview took in rescue animals and featured a petting zoo and events for children.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Pendleton is in Niagara County, 15 miles north of Buffalo.
