CHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Officials say a New York man has been killed in a hunting accident after he was shot by a companion.
Terry Lavergne, 53, of Warrensburg, N.Y. was killed Saturday at about 8:20 a.m. in the woods near Chester. The Warren County sheriff's office says he was hunting with two others and was standing still when he was struck in the hip by a single round fired from a .308-caliber rifle. The bullet struck his femoral artery.
His companions, who were not identified by police, tried to save Lavergne's life and carried him more than a mile out of the thicket to an ambulance, but he died at a hospital.
The sheriff's office says no criminal charges have been filed. The investigation is ongoing.
An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
