Albany, N.Y. (AP) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the number of apple trees in New York state is on the rise.

Officials say the number grew by 22 percent from 2006 to 2011. There were more than 11 million trees last year, compared to more than 9 million five years earlier.

The acreage under cultivation statewide dropped slightly, but growers grew more trees per acre.

Niagara County showed the greatest increase in acreage at 25 percent.
