ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Environmental officials say a law that allowed hunters to kill big game with crossbows during the regular firearms seasons in New York is expiring at the end of the year.
That means hunters can't use the weapons during the deer season in Suffolk County in January and the special deer season in part of Tompkins County, also in January.
The law that took effect on Feb. 1, 2011 allowed crossbows during big game seasons the past two years.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo vetoed a bill last week that would have extended their use for more two years. He said a provision prohibiting the Department of Environmental Conservation from continuing a special weekend for youth hunting with longbows shouldn't have been attached to the measure.
