WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - The family of a New York teen who was swept away to sea in Hawaii says they're grateful for the community's support.
According to the Coast Guard, 15-year-old Tyler Madoff of White Plains was with a tour group that stopped to rest in a tide pool on Big Island when a set of waves swept him away. A 14-year-old boy was also washed away, but was picked up by a private boat.
The search for Tyler includes scuba divers, helicopters and boats. His father has asked residents with personal boats also to assist.
In a statement Friday, Tyler's family requested privacy but expressed gratitude for people's support and prayers.
Neighbor Carol Ashe told the Journal News (http://lohud.us/LTkUeg ) that the Scarsdale High School student would shovel her driveway in the winter.
