Greece, N.Y. - Greece Police used OnStar to track a suspected car thief.

Ronald Reis, 49, is charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. Police say he took his ex-girlfriend's car and refused to return it.

OnStar was able to locate the vehicle on Route 490 and remotely turn on the parking lights so officers would know which vehicle to follow. Then, OnStar disabled the throttle, bringing the vehicle to a stop.

Reis was taken into custody without incident.

Police say the technology is a valuable tool.

"It was great because one officer is on the phone with OnStar. OnStar is doing its thing. It's a play-by-play. No officers need to speed into the area. You can pretty much decide when and where you want to stop the car," said Lt. Jason Helfer.

When police found Reis, they say he was heading away from Greece, where his ex-girlfriend lives.

He is being held in the Monroe County Jail.
