(CNN) - Could texting be going the way of the land line?
Experts say not yet, but for the first time in U.S. history, the number of monthly texts fell.
Still, the average American cell phone user sends 675 texts per month. That's compared to a 700 texts per month average earlier this year.
That doesn't mean we're communicating less, but rather finding other ways than texting.
More than half of cell phones in the U.S. are smart phones. Many of those users are turning to apps like Skype, Google Voice and Facebook messenger.
Many text services are built right into smart phones, like Apple's iMessage and Blackberry's Messenger.
