Fairport, N.Y., Eileen Horak calls it Karma.
Friday night, she and her husband, Rob, were dining out after a full day watching the PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club. Minutes after giving away two PGA tickets for Saturday, Rob’s phone rang. Rob knew the call was in connection with the PGA, but that didn’t surprise him.
He’s Western New York’s PGA tournament chairman. He’s also a golf pro at Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor.
What the person on the other end had to say floored him.
At the end of play on Friday, the cut left an odd number of golfers for Saturday and Sunday. That meant they needed an extra golfer to complete the last pair. Because a couple golfers who would have likely been asked first were out of town, they turned to Horak.
“One thing I’ve always wanted to do was to play in an Open or PGA … at 52 or 53 the opportunity was by me, but then this, which is a dream come true,” Horak said.
So on Saturday morning, Horak teed off alongside Matt Jones.
“I was going hole to hole and people kept yelling, ‘Go get ‘em, Rob!’” Rob remembers. “This weekend, it was just something so special I’ll never forget.”
On Sunday, Horak was paired with Gary Woodland. Eileen was following him the whole time. “He works so hard and to get this honor is just fantastic,” said Eileen.
Rob says the crowd’s roar that met him on the green of the 18th hole will always stay with him.
In that crowd, perhaps, those two people who gladly accepted those free tickets.
