Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - The Carolina Panthers fired special teams coordinator Brian Murphy on Monday.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Murphy was let go due to "philosophical differences and productivity." Richard Rodgers, the team's assistant special teams coach, will replace Murphy.

"I told coach Rodgers what I wanted," Rivera said. "I wanted things simplified. I wanted to come back to fundamental basics and that's the direction we're going to head right now."

The move comes one day after the Panthers allowed a 76-yard punt return for a touchdown to Trindon Holliday in a 36-14 loss to Denver.

The Panthers (2-7) play Tampa Bay this Sunday.
