The New Orleans Saints placed fullback Heath Evans on injured reserve on Thursday and agreed to terms with fullback Kyle Eckel, team general manager Mickey Loomis announced.

Evans, a nine-year pro, went down with a season-ending knee injury in the Saints' 46-34 come-from-behind win at Miami last Sunday.

In his first season with New Orleans, Evans finishes 2009 with 10 catches for 70 yards and three total touchdowns, including a rushing score.

Eckel, a product of the Naval Academy, is in his third NFL season. He appeared in five games last season with Philadelphia, registering 79 rushing yards on 24 touches. In 17 career games with New England and the Eagles, Eckel has gained 169 yards on the ground and scored twice.

The Saints also announced they have added running back Herb Donaldson to their practice squad.
