Family remembers Pullman Ave. shooting victim
Rochester, N.Y.On Thursday night, family and friends of 27-year-old Walesy Alvarez gathered for a vigil on Pullman Avenue.
Alvarez was shot and killed Wednesday morning. Her boyfriend, 33-year-old Martin Moore, was also shot and remains at Strong Memorial Hospital in guarded condition.
Police believed that 26-year-old Marcus Freeman was responsible for the shooting and there was an active manhunt for him for nearly 30 hours.
Freeman was finally found when several tips led police to a home on Second Street in Rochester. According to the Rochester Police Department, Freeman surrendered without incident.
He is set to be arraigned on murder and attempted murder charges on Friday morning.
Alvarezs family says they are relieved and glad that Freeman was caught, but they are still reeling over the loss of their loved one.
Several family members told 13WHAM that Alvarez was a mother of three children and that she often worked double shifts at her job to be sure she could provide for them.
She was just the most loving, caring person, said Mucho Martinez, Alvarezs cousin. She was a good mother who always took care of her kids. She was happy and cheerful.
Martinez explained that Freeman lived at the Pullman Avenue home where the shooting occurred Wednesday morning.
He said that Alvarez was at the home with her boyfriend, Moore who was helping his sister move out the house. Moores sister was dating Freeman at the time.
According to witnesses in the neighborhood, a U-Haul truck pulled into the driveway and several people started moving things into the truck. It wasnt long after the moving efforts started that a man came up to the scene and started shooting.
When asked why something like this happened, Alvarezs family explained that Alvarez and Freeman used to be family friends. However, tensions between the two rose when Freeman was arrested for rape this past March. The family says the alleged victim is Alvarezs family member.
Rochester Police would not comment on what the motive might be.
Freeman was indicted on rape charges in June and was out on $20,000 at the time of the shooting.
Right now, Alvarezs family is focused on taking care of the three children she left behind.
[They are asking], Where is Mommy? When is she going to come pick me up? Where is mommy? explained Alvarezs cousin Carlos Calderon. That's so sad to hear. Now they have to grow up without a mother.
