Chiapperini and Kaczowka honored in Maryland
Emmitsburg Md. - Thousands of firefighters and families met in Maryland to mourn 81 lives lost -- firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2012.
Lieutenant Mike Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka, two West Webster fire fighters killed in an ambush on Christmas Eve were honored at the National Fallen Firefighter Memorial service Sunday. More than 100 people from the Webster area attended the ceremony at Mount Saint Mary University in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Were honored to be a part of the ceremony paying tribute to all of these firemen, said West Webster firefighter Ken Smith.
The names of the 81 firefighters were read aloud, Smith, along with many others around him, began to weep when Chiapperini and Kaczowkas names were called. They're both greatly missed in the town of Webster," Smith said after the service.
42-year-old Chiapperini and 19-year-old Kaczowka were killed in the line of duty, gunned down while responding to a fire in Webster on Christmas Eve. Smith said, Two of our firefighter were murdered on that morning and its a shame that they had to go.
What happened that day, Smith said, brought him and more than 100 others to the memorial to pay tribute to his fallen brothers and thank them for their service.
"We're honored to be here to honor them and to represent them and to pay respects for what they did for us, and for the community."
