Store owner stands up to attempted robber
Greece, N.Y. - You could say Surendra Sunny Shangari, owner of the convenient mart on Denise Road in Greece has everything to lose.
Its one of the reasons why he fights hard to protect his store.
Sunny did that almost two weeks ago, preventing an attempted robbery and it was all caught on camera.
In surveillance video provided by the store owner, you can see a man with a black cloth over his face enter the store.
I told him that he cannot come into the store with those clothes on and he said, it's my religion, and I said religion is fine but not in the store you can do it, Shangari said.
That's when Sunny said the man demanded money and Sunny decided to take a bold stand.
I told him if that's the way it is, then I'll have to call the cops, Shangari said. I picked up the phone, went behind the counter, picked up my baseball bat and then I called the cops and he started moving out.
The video shows Sunny chase the suspect out of the store, who then got into a car and took off; but not before Sunny wrote down the license plate number.
Its been almost two weeks since the incident and Sunny is wondering why there's still no arrest and claims police aren't doing more with the case.
Police say they're doing everything they can.
A license plate leads you to a car, a license plate is a good lead and it's just that, Captain Pat Phelan with the Greece Police Department said. It's an investigative lead, it points you in a particular direction but it doesn't close the case.
Greece police say every case is different and the time it takes to complete a case varies.
As of now, police say they have leads and the investigation is still open.
