Pickleball continues to grow in Rochester area

Webster, N.Y. -- Pickleball has become a growing hobby in Rochester, especially since the new pickleball courts opened at Ontario Beach Park in July 2012.

The game is a mix of ping-pong and tennis. Its caught on in local gym classes and parks.

Saturday, pickleball enthusiasts stayed indoors to play in a tournament at Webster Schroeder High School, with donations going to the Webster Athletic Fund.

Joe Valenti, president of the Valenti Sports Pickleball Club, said the game can be a lifelong activity.

We've got a lot of older players that don't want to play tennis on a big court, he said. The pickleball court is about a quarter of the size of a tennis court, so you get all the hand-eye coordination and action with a lot less running, but it's a very competitive game.
