Why the Bidens visit MCC
Brighton, N.Y. --- Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Dr. Jill Biden will visit the campus of Monroe Community College on Wednesday, a day after President Barack Obama delivers his State of the Union address.
While White House Officials and those involved in the planning are being guarded with details the visit will surely serve as a way to drive home certain themes from the State of the Union address.
Some believe the education and jobs theme that many expect the President to address is well-represented at MCCs Applied Technologies Center where the Bidens will visit Wednesday morning.
"He's going to talk about how do we get folks that maybe aren't benefiting from an economic recovery, well we have to match their skills to the emerging jobs that are coming and the community colleges will play a big role in making that match happen, speculated Mark Peterson of Greater Rochester Enterprise. "You've heard Governor (Andrew) Cuomo talk about it, there's 220,000 jobs open right now in the State of New York that are not being filled because we can't get people with the correct skillsets to fill those jobs.
Inside the Applied Technologies Center ongoing education programs focus on workforce development and filling needs in the workplace. Often local companies with a need for workers with a specific skillset partner with MCC to develop a training program for those openings.
The biggest problem they have at that place is even before those kids graduate they get hired, said Peterson. As soon as they get the training they need for the company the company will hire them because the companies have a need. There are jobs available, they're good jobs and as soon as people are trained and capable of moving into those manufacturing companies they're going to be a marketable commodity.
