NY man missing on Lake Ontario, boat washed ashore

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard is using boats and aircraft to search for an upstate New York sailor who's missing on Lake Ontario.

Canadian authorities reported Scott French's 32-foot sailboat "Persnickety" washed up Saturday afternoon on the Ontario shore with nobody on board.

The Coast Guard says the Rochester man had sailed from Sodus Bay at about 9 a.m. Saturday and would usually head north for 10-to-15 miles before returning. His boat was found directly north of the bay at Pointe Petre.

Petty Officer Christopher Yaw says U.S. searchers got involved Sunday when French's family said he typically didn't sail to the Canadian side.

Also Monday, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said the body of a man who'd been knocked out of his boat by a wave on Sunday was found in Sodus Bay.
